Pillars, walls, steps and feature stonework lose their character fast under mould, moss and grime. Sandstone is soft — clean it wrong and you pit it, streak it or bleach it. We clean carefully, using the right pressure and the right chemistry for the exact stone in front of us.
- Sandstone walls, pillars, steps, capping and feature paving
- Low-pressure soft wash tuned for the specific stone
- Patch test on every job before we commit to a method
- Safe on heritage stonework and mortared joints
- No acid cleaners, no wire brushes, no pressure marks
- Post-clean sealing available on request
Why it matters on the Northern Beaches
Sydney is built on Hawkesbury sandstone — it's the bedrock that the Beaches sit on, it's the cliff face behind half the homes in Avalon and Palm Beach, and it's the material used for most pre-war foundations, retaining walls and feature landscaping. Because it's porous and mineral-rich it holds moisture and feeds organic growth easily. South-facing walls go black with mould. Horizontal surfaces like steps and capping stones collect algae and turn slippery. Salt crystallisation from coastal air can cause surface flaking if the stone is already weathered. All of that needs handling with more care than a standard concrete clean.
Our process
We test a discreet patch first — some stone responds beautifully, other pieces (especially anything with iron staining or previous sealant) can react unpredictably. The clean itself is a low-pressure soft wash in most cases: a mild biocide application, a dwell period, and a gentle rinse. Where mechanical cleaning is needed we stay well below the pressure that would etch the stone, we use wider fan tips, and we keep the wand moving. Heavier deposits get multiple lighter passes rather than one aggressive one. We never use acid-based brick cleaners on sandstone — they bleach it and eat the binder. Where feature walls sit alongside painted render or brick, we'll sequence the work so the sandstone doesn't catch runoff from a house wash.
What can go wrong if it's done rough
The damage from overcooked sandstone cleaning is permanent. Pressure marks look like teardrops running down the stone — they're zones where the binding matrix has been blown out. Bleached patches from acidic cleaners change the colour for good. Scrubbed areas from wire brushes leave a rougher surface that then holds more dirt than before. We're careful because you can't put the stone back. The right approach on sandstone is patience and chemistry, not force.
When to book it in
Sandstone features hold up well between cleans — three to five years is typical for most residential walls and steps. Heritage façades, pool-surround sandstone and anything in permanent shade can need it sooner. If you're looking at a re-point, a repair or a sealant top-up, it's a good idea to clean first so you're working on a sound surface.
