Why it matters on the Northern Beaches
Ocean-facing glass picks up a fine salt film within days of rain. Left there, that salt cycles between wet and dry, etches into the glass surface, and eventually causes permanent hazing on the side that faces the prevailing wind. Homes back from the water have their own problem — pollen, gum resin and the black mould-spore film that shadow-side windows attract in the humid months. We bring the right gear for each situation rather than using a single technique everywhere.
Our process
Inside and accessible outside windows are hand-cleaned with a proper squaring-off technique using a soap solution, scrim and squeegee — no microfibre smears, no cheap sprays that leave a residue. High and awkward glass is done with a water-fed pole system using purified, deionised water so the panes air-dry without spots. Sills are wiped, tracks are brushed and vacuumed, and if you've got flyscreens we'll pull them down, hose them off and reset them. Heavy salt film or bird droppings get a pre-treatment rather than being ground into the glass.
What can go wrong if it's done rough
Glass that's been scraped with a dry blade, cleaned with ammonia around tinted films, or hit with high pressure at close range can be permanently marked — and those marks only show up once the light hits them from the right angle. We don't use blades on toughened glass (which includes most modern balustrades and pool fencing — see our pool glass cleaning service), we keep pressure away from seals and silicone, and we carry the right cloths so frames and sills aren't streaked afterwards. Pair it with a house wash and you get the whole façade looking consistent, rather than clean glass against dirty render.
When to book it in
For most homes a twice-yearly clean keeps the glass in good condition — we'd normally pick one in spring after the worst of the wind and pollen, and one before the end-of-year guests arrive. Shopfronts and cafés typically need fortnightly or monthly visits to look professional. For beach-front properties, expect to go shorter than that to keep the salt from etching.
